Gehrig Conference It's been a good 12 months for Paul Faits - his 1965 Redbirds were World Champions, he played point guard on the 1966 Agawam High School Valley Wheel Champs, and now he leads the 1966 Gehrig Conference All-Stars to a presumed victory in the All-Star game. With the plethora of power hitters in the Gehrig lineup and the fantastic pitching of the Plymouth Pilgrims staff, it is hard to imagine the Gehrig squad losing. I was happy for the most part with the starters elected, but I like to look first at this year's performance, and would not have put Joe Morgan on the starting squad based on his numbers this year. In the outfield, Willie Mays would have had to sit this year, as the numbers put up by Leon Wagner deserved to be recognized. The only at-large selection I would not have made is Carl Yastrezemski. His inclusion forced Felipe Alou off the team, who I thought was more deserving. Among the pitchers, Gibson and Koufax forced short relievers Humphries and McCool off the squad. I guess you could make a compelling argument that starting pitchers are more deserving than short relievers. As to the game itself, Morgan and Mays will probably be the first ones out of the game. The pitching will be handled by the Plymouth Pilgrims staff, who are having an unbelievable year, with a team E.R.A. about 1.5 runs better than expected. The game should be played face to face around the end of this month, or first week of February. Paul Faits
