REDBIRDS BREAK THROUGH AGAINST MCDOWELL, ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS Dateline - St. Louis, October, 1965. St. Louis broke a 1-1 tie with a 4 run uprising in the 5th, and went on to beat the Whips 9-3 in game 7 of the 1965 World Series, and claimed the title of World Champions. Sam McDowell, who dominated his first two starts in the series, looked a bit unsteady when he took the mound today. His first pitch was wild, hitting Jimmy Wynn in the ribs. He then walked Jimmy Hall on 4 pitches. Ron Santo hit the next pitch deep to left. Mickey Mantle caught the ball with his back against the fence, and Wynn tagged and took third on the play. Willie Mays, still without a hit in the series, swung at a pitch out of the strike zone, hitting a slow roller to the left side. Ron Hansen was able to get to it and throw Mays out at 1st, but Wynn crossed the plate, and the Redbirds had an early lead. Willie McCovey then booted Gordy Goleman's ground ball, putting runners on the corners, but Larry Brown struck out to end the inning. Bob Shaw was on the hill for the Birds, and while he did not dominate, he got the job done. He held the Whips scoreless into the 4th inning. Willie McCovey singled to start the top of the 4th, took 2nd on a groundout by Pete Ward, and third on a groundout by Cookie Rojas. After a walk to Ron Hansen, McCovey scored when Shaw unleashed a wild pitch. Phil Roof then grounded out to end the threat, but the score was tied. St. Louis knocked out McDowell and won the series in the 5th. Shaw grounded out to start the inning, but Jimmy Wynn connected for a long home run for the Redbirds second run of the game. Jimmy Hall followed with a base hit, and the whole game turned on the next play. Ron Santo hit what looked like a double play grounder to Ron Hansen. Hansen threw wildly past second, however, and both runners were safe. Mays, still not being pitched to and still hitless, walked to load the bases. Gordy Coleman smacked McDowell's next pitch into right field for a base hit scoring Hall and Santo and sending Mays to 3rd. That was all for McDowell, and Jim Maloney came on in relief. Larry Brown greeted him with a base hit to score Mays, the the Birds lead 5-1. The Whips, in the manner of a good team fought right back in the top of the 6th. Shaw struck out Curt Flood to start the inning, but McCovey lined a shot down the right field line good for two bases. McCovey took third on a ground out by Ward, and scored when Rojas singled up the middle. Ron Hansen then doubled into the left-centerfield gap. Whips manager Pete Shibley waved Rojas around third, but Willie Mays cut the ball off, fired to Brown, who fired a strike to Clay Dalrymple that beat Rojas by twenty feet. Rojas tried to run over Dalrymple, but Clay held the ball to end the inning. Dalrymple was injured on the play, and had to leave the game. The Redbirds had another uprising in the 8th for 4 runs, and the Whips lone run in the 9th didn't mean much. We know that St. Louis fans will be talking about this one for years to come. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP Whips 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 1 3 8 2 7 2 Redbirds 1 0 0 0 4 0 0 4 X 9 11 1 9 1 Whips AB R H BI AVG Redbirds AB R H BI AVG Green rf 5 0 0 0 .182 Wynn rf 2 3 2 1 .435 Mantle lf 4 0 0 0 .200 Hall lf 4 2 3 1 .259 Flood cf 4 0 1 0 .250 Santo 3b 5 1 1 2 .160 McCovey 1b 4 2 2 0 .348 Mays cf 3 1 0 1 .000 Ward 3b 4 0 1 0 .250 Coleman 1b 5 1 2 3 .118 Rojas 2b 4 1 2 1 .286 Fisher p 0 0 0 0 .000 Hansen ss 2 0 1 0 .217 Brown ss 5 0 2 1 .346 Maris ph 0 0 0 0 .000 Hinton 2b 3 0 1 0 .105 Roof c 2 0 0 0 .100 Blasingame 2b 1 0 0 0 .125 Barker ph 0 0 0 0 .000 Dalrymple c 3 0 0 0 .250 Howard c 0 0 0 0 .333 Satriano c 1 0 0 0 .000 Mota ph 1 0 0 0 .125 Shaw p 2 0 0 0 .000 McDowell p 2 0 0 0 .000 Lumpe ph 1 0 0 0 .333 Maloney p 0 0 0 0 .000 Sutherland p 0 0 0 0 .000 Lee p 0 0 0 0 .000 McCraw 1b 0 1 0 0 .250 Chance ph 1 0 0 0 .333 35 9 11 9 Miller p 0 0 0 0 .000 Linzy p 0 0 0 0 .000 Valentine ph 1 0 1 1 .500 34 3 8 2 Whips INN H R ER BB SO ERA McDowell L 1-2 4.1 5 5 4 3 4 2.42 Maloney 1.1 2 0 0 2 4 5.40 Lee 0.1 0 0 0 0 1 3.60 Miller 1.0 0 1 1 1 0 4.15 Linzy 1.0 4 3 3 0 0 7.36 8.0 11 9 8 6 9 Redbirds INN H R ER BB SO ERA Shaw W 1-0 6.0 6 2 2 1 6 2.45 Sutherland 2.0 0 0 0 1 1 2.45 Fisher 1.0 2 1 1 1 0 2.45 9.0 8 3 3 3 7 Whips: Barker batted for Roof in the 7th Chance batted for Lee in the 7th Howard inserted at c in the 7th Maris batted for Hansen in the 7th Mota batted for Howard in the 9th Valentine batted for Linzy in the 9th Redbirds: Blasingame inserted at 2b in the 6th Lumpe batted for Shaw in the 6th Satriano inserted at c in the 7th McCraw batted for Sutherland in the 8th McCraw moved to 1b in the 9th E-McCovey, Hansen, Hall. 2B-McCovey, Ward, Hansen, Hall.
