REDBIRDS RALLY TO WIN 7-1, FORCE 7TH GAME SHOWDOWN Dateline - St. Louis, October, 1965. Back in the cozy confines of Busch Stadium, Redbirds bats came alive today as St. Louis defeated the Whipernon Whips 7-1 to tie the series at 3 games each. Clay Dalrymple had the game winning hit for St. Louis, an RBI single in the 4th. Jimmy Hall and Jimmy Wynn each homered and drove in two runs for the winning side. The Whips lone run came on a solo home run by Willie McCovey. Vern Law allowed only 5 hits in a route-going perfomance, his second win of the series. Sonny Siebert was terrible once again for the Whips, falling to 0-2, 9.31. The Whips struck first today, as Willie McCovey led off the 2nd with a towering home run deep to right field. That was all she wrote, however, as Vern Law shut them down on 4 hits the rest of the way. St. Louis tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd. Clay Dalrymple singled to start the St. Louis half of the inning. Vern Law tried to bunt him to 2nd, but Pete Ward, anticipating the bunt, moved in close, fielded the bunt, and threw to 2nd base in time to force Dalrymple. Jimmy Wynn kept the rally alive, however, dumping a base hit to left, Law taking 2nd on the play. Jimmy Hall then hit a ground ball to Cookie Rojas, who flipped the ball to Hansen for the force at 2nd, but Ron's return throw to first was too late to complete the double play. Ron Santo then singled to tie the game. Willie Mays, 0-14 to this point in the series, drew yet another walk as Whips manger Pete Shibley refused to let his pitchers throw a strike to Mays. The stragey worked here, as Gordy Coleman grounded out to end the inning. St. Louis broke the game open in the 4th. Chuck Hinton struck out to start the Bird's half, but Larry Brown doubled to left. Dalrymple singled to right, scoring Brown, and Jimmy Wynn followed with a home run to make it 4-1. Dalrymple doubled home a run in the 6th, and Hall hit a two run homer in the 8th to complete the scoring. Game 7 tommorrow: Sam McDowell (2-0, 1.00) will try to win it all for the Whips.
