PERRY AND LINZY SHUT DOWN REDBIRDS 4-1 Dateline - New York, October, 1965. Jim Perry and Frank Linzy combined to hold the St. Louis Redbirds to 1 run on six hits today, giving the Whips a 3 games to 2 lead as the series moves back to St. Louis. Mickey Mantle hit the game winner, a solo home run with two outs in the 3rd off Whitey Ford. Whipernon padded the lead with 3 more in the 4th, as Perry and Linzy coasted to the win. The Redbirds' lone run came on a solo home run by Jimmy Wynn in the 6th. Curt Flood doubled to start the bottom of the 4th. Ford then walked Willie McCovey intentionally. Cookie Rojas flied out to left for the first out, but Pete Ward followed with a base hit to right, scoring Flood and sending McCovey to 3rd. Ward took 2nd on Wynn's throw to the plate, and Ron Hansen's single scored both runners to make it 4-0. After an off day, the series resumes in St. Louis. The matchups: Sonny Siebert (0-1, 11.57) vs Vern Law (1-0, 4.50). Manager Paul Faits was asked for his comments after the game. "Well, I would have liked to have split the last two games here, but we'll just have to get the job done at home. Willie Mays is 0-13. He's due to break loose, and we can put some runs on the board when he's hitting." When asked about facing Sam McDowell one more time, Faits' said "What have we got, no runs off him in the last 15 innings? I'm not looking past game 6, but we got Willie Mays hitless and Sam McDowell invincible. If he can come in here and beat us 3 times in two weeks, the Whips deserve the title. We're sending over a couple of cases of Anheuser Busch product to Sam after each game. He should be sharp if we make it to game 7." Whips manage Peter Shibley said "We're just happy to be here. We came from behind all year and can't believe we have a chance to win it all!
