McDOWELL IS AWESOME, THROWS 1 - HITTER AT REDBIRDS

  Dateline - New York, October, 1965. "Sudden" Sam McDowell rose to the
  occasion as manger Pete Shibley demanded, taking a no-hitter two outs deep
  into the 8th inning, as he shut out the St. Louis Redbirds 2-0, to tie the
  World Series at two games each.
       McDowell was in control all the way, striking out 9.  No one had a
  hit until Clay Dalrymple lined a clean single to right with two outs in
  the 8th inning. McDowell walked only two batters, both coming in the 5th
  inning. McDowell had a perfect game through 4 innings.  Willie Mays, still
  hitless in the series, walked to open the 5th.  After McCraw struck out,
  Brown sacraficed Mays to 2nd. Chuck Hinton then walked, but Dalrymple
  grounded out to end the inning.  The only other baserunner for the
  Redbirds was Dalrymple in the 8th.
       Bob Gibson fell to 0-2, despite pitching a strong game for St. Louis.
  Gibson walked Lenny Green to start the Whips' half of the 3rd. Mickey
  Mantle struck out.  Curt Flood followed with a ground ball to first.
  McCraw took the out at 1st, with Green taking second. Gibson went after
  Willie McCovey, who lined a single to left to score Green.  That was all
  McDowell would need.   Whipernon got one more in the 6th.  Flood singled
  to start the inning. Gibson then walked McCovey, and Ward followed with a
  base hit to make it 2-0, Whips, which is how it ended.
       Rubber game tommorrow, Ford (1-0, 3.60) vs Jim Perry (9-5, 3.36)
